Professor W.J. Swindall awarded CBE in New Year Honours

Professor W.J. Swindall, the consulting director of the Queen’s University Ionic Liquid Laboratories (QUILL) Research Centre has been awarded Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the British 2010 New Year’s honours List. This highly prestigious award recognises Professor Swindall’s distinguished dedication to environmental science throughout his career, and builds upon his 1998 award of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

Professor Swindall has been associated with the School of Chemistry since 1961, but most recently, under his direction, the QUESTOR Centre and the QUILL Centre each received Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for further and higher education in 1996 and 2006, respectively.

The British honours system is over 650 years old and recognises merit, gallantry and service of exceptional individuals. Honours lists are published twice a year at New Year and in mid-June on the date of The Queen's official birthday. Any British national can receive an award if they reach the required standard of merit or service, and honours lists contain a wide variety of people from different backgrounds.
